An update from Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company about what's on in 2017 and 2018. 

Yirra Yaakin (Yir-raarh Yaarh-kin] which means “Stand Tall” in Noongar language, is based in the heart of the Noongar Nation – a distinct Aboriginal cultural group from the south-west of Western Australia. Yirra Yaakin is Australia’s largest Aboriginal-led theatre company and has been producing and presenting an annual program of quality contemporary Aboriginal theatre since 1993.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company have created a lasting contribution to the people of Western Australia producing and presenting world-class theatre that is both entertaining and educational.

Over the past twenty two years Yirra Yaakin has won 23 awards; delivered over 1,000 workshops; performed 800 shows; undertaken 43 tours; commissioned over 50 new Australian works; employed over 400 Aboriginal Arts workers; facilitated 45,000 Workshop Participants; and our shows have been seen by over 400,000 audience members. Internationally Yirra Yaakin has toured to six continents and 13 countries, and has been involved in 31 international events.

Yirra Yaakin has won awards including Best Overall Partnership in the State Business Arts Awards, Excellence in Community Partnerships, the Prince of Wales Trophy for Outstanding Community Service and the Indigenous Facilitators Prize at the Sidney Myer Awards.

The Company is passionately committed to producing and presenting a mixture of contemporary and classic Aboriginal theatre, balanced with our existing community service and education programs.
