Hop on board our spaceship and get ready for blast off! WHOOSH! is a  new interactive multi-sensory adventure that puts children with disabilities  in the Captain’s Chair!

Hop on board our spaceship and get ready for blast off! Calling all budding astronauts! Become a pilot, engineer or navigator as we whoosh across the galaxy for an interstellar adventure for the whole family. Join our crew to explore outer space, taste space food, experience hyperspace and travel all the way to the mysterious Planet X. We’ll have to work as a team to repair the ship and return to Earth. WHOOSH! is a new interactive multi-sensory adventure that puts children with disability in the Captain’s Chair! Created by pioneering theatre makers Sensorium Theatre, this unique performance is suitable for children with a broad range of access needs, including those with multiple and complex needs and those on the autism spectrum.

WHOOSH! is an immersive work that puts children with disabilities at the centre of action. Kids board a stunning custom-built spaceship to co-pilot an interstellar adventure. New recruits take up their own tech stations, taste real space food, propel through hyperdrive, crash-land and explore a strange uncharted planet. Characters and audience work as a team to repair the ship and return to Earth. This highly-tailored production is suitable for children with a broad range of access needs aged 6 – 12, including those with multiple and complex needs and those on the autism spectrum. With an impressive set and pioneering use of technology, including a new digital app to deliver pre-show materials, this is Sensorium Theatre’s most ambitious production to date. Developed over three years, we’ve refined our delivery model to increase audience agency and overall capacity while maintaining intimate session sizes. Almost as important as the performance itself are the preparatory materials made available through Sensorium Theatre digital app which audience members are encouraged to download prior to the show for free. This is an important tool in helping children become familiar with the story, characters, songs and storytelling methods used in the performance.

“The company has a wonderful rapport with their audiences and meets every individual right where they are” – Peg Schuler-Armstrong, Lincoln Center Education
“These artists understand and respect their audiences as co-explorers and the adventure that ensures in Whoosh! is utterly joyous.” – Jenny Simpson, CEO Awesome Children’s Festival
“Perfect for students with autism and intellectual disability. Highly inclusive and, for one of my students, it is the most joyful I have ever seen him .purely as this perfectly catered for his individual needs. The support provided to staff to cater for sensory needs in the classroom is also fantastic.” – Survey Respondent (Teacher)
“It was the very best incursion we have had. A well-balanced, integrated learning experience that provides the students with the opportunity to experience/ express their own individual creativity…[and tap] into their spirituality. Equally great for staff.” Teacher, Kenwick School
“We use the word multi-sensory a lot, but I don’t think I really understood until now.” Teacher, Gladys Newton School, Balga

Staging and Set Description (up to 1500 characters) WHOOSH! is a self contained production that is designed to go into any kind of large space (theatre space, rehearsal room, big all). No special lighting or blackout is required. The floor space must be even, clean and empty. WHOOSH! is an immersive and interactive multi-sensory adventure that puts children with profound and multiple disabilities at the centre of action. Kids board a spaceship; a custom-built dome structure with twelve tech stations secured along the inside. The kids take up their own tech stations to co-pilot their journey into space. They taste real space food, propel through hyperdrive and then crash-land in to a strange uncharted planet. The planet space is erected beneath a self-supported truss (toured by the company) and is connected to the dome structure through a door between the two spaces. The planet is fitted with giant inflatables, neon objects, and wifi enabled “orbs” that glow in coloured patterns and emit sound. Characters and audience work as a team to repair the ship and return to Earth. This highly-tailored production is suitable for children with a broad range of access needs aged 5years+, including those with multiple and complex needs and those on the autism spectrum. A slow introduction to the performance takes place on entry to the space. Children are encouraged to take off their shoes and explore the space as they meet the performers before the show begins.

What community engagement is possible with this work?
A menu that includes the Digital App, Sensory Storytelling program, and our Professional Learning program. Digital App: Sensorium Theatre’s digital app enables children to balance the scary elements of WHOOSH! with the safe by encountering the key elements of WHOOSH! in advance. The digital app is free to download and provide audience members with pre-show preparatory materials. Sensory Storytelling program: Sensory Storytelling takes popular stories and nursery rhymes like Wombat Stew and Twinkle Twinkle and connects them with live music, singing and interactive sensory play to create a unique, fun and bonding experience for children, their families and carers. Music and sensory play (touch, taste and smell) add to children’s understanding and enjoyment of rhymes and stories, and support the development of language, and independence. These stories and rhymes are delivered over 4 or 5 40-minute long sessions with 3 sessions per day for up to 14 children and their caregivers. Professional Learning: Sensorium Theatre offers professional learning opportunities for artists, educators, librarians, therapists, carers and disability support workers. Module 1: Senses Awakening is a hands-on, experiential workshop designed to build the confidence and capacity of participants to deliver more inclusive story sessions by connecting sensory experiences with narrative and text. Module 2: Introduction to Sensory Rhymetime is a hands-on, experiential workshop workers designed to build the confidence and capacity of participants to deliver more inclusive story sessions by connecting sensory experiences with simple and well-known nursery rhymes. It is recommended that Module 2 is run in conjunction with the Sensory Storytelling delivery so that the module participants are able to observe this delivery in action, and its impact on the audience.
