Sally Richardson is one of WA’s most experienced and respected independent artists working across the arts. A director, writer, dramaturg and producer she is passionately committed to the creation of hybrid work and developing collaborations with other artists in this region, championing the voice, artistry and presence of women in the performing arts. Sally has developed, produced & toured over 30 original works through her company Steamworks Arts & is co-director of MAXIMA Circus. Sally has worked for companies inc: Black Swan Theatre Company, Perth Theatre Company, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Deckchair Theatre, The Flying Fruitfly Circus, NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts), Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, WAAPA, Performing Lines & NAISDA with productions of her work awarded Helpmann, Green Room, Blue Room, Ausdance WA, PAWA Awards, Dance Australia Critics Choice & presented at major arts festivals nationally & internationally. Sally is a graduate of Australia Council’s Arts Leaders program 2019 & has undertaken artist residencies across Australia, Iceland, Taiwan & Hong Kong. Sally is an industry advocate & peer assessor, Deputy Chair (CAN), a board director of Ausdance National & a member of the Helpmann Awards Theatre panel.
Recent credits inc: MEDEA for Black Swan Theatre Company, CATCH! (AWESOME Festival), CONNECT sound/video installation, Asialink/Taipei Artist Village tenth anniversary, award-winning Australian/Taiwan collaboration GUI SHU (belong) with Steamworks Arts/PLWA/PICA. In 2020 she showcased GUI SHU at APAM, AsiaTOPA & presented circus/dance work MUSE for Strut/Tura New Music program Situ8 (STCWA) 2021 saw her premiere critically acclaimed seasons of solo dance theatre work JULIA & Savage Grace (STCWA) & video works Feminism has no Borders (Perth Festival) & GUI SHU at OzAsia Festival.
